Extreme Hoof Wall Repair
Justin's work from yesterday. I've tried to write this in simplified terms so everyone knows what I'm talking about. LOL Justin rebuilt the hoof wall on a horse that had previously foundered. She had extreme hoof wall separation that became infected.
So he cut out the infected area of the hoof (using nippers and a dremel!), sanitized it, and rebuilt as much of it as he could with Equi-Thane. Equi-Thane is a temporary solution that mimics the structure of a horse's hoof wall. Some of it could not be covered because it had already reached sensitive tissue in the mare's foot.
He then tacked on aluminum wedge shoes, which are used therapeutically on horses that have foundered. It alleviates strain on the tendons in the horse's legs by raising up the heels. This prevents the coffin bone from dropping/rotating any further than it already has.
It isn't pretty, but the mare walked off without a limp when he was finished!
This is why he loves his job!!!!
The Equi-Thane will last about 6 weeks. He'll be able to "pretty" it up then!
